Statement

I create immersive spaces to physically inhabit, with conditions that offer a direct, physical experience. Listening to the body can provide a counterpoint to the conscious, empirically based knowledge that fills most of our waking lives. This (re)source is accessible to all, and experienced differently by everyone.
I am inspired by the paradoxical reality that I am the center of my experience, and so is everyone else, and my sculptures invite each participant to bring their own reality to center stage. Often my work has multiple centers for multiple simultaneous participants.
I incorporate sound within the space of my recent sculptures to accentuate silence and activate listening. In my recent “Please Lie Down” and “Standing Sound Costumes” series, I explore the acoustic resonance of materials including basswood, ceramic, lead, and felt. I am investigating the notion that both clothing & architecture are structures built around the body -- merging a spatial, material, & physical engagement with questions of potential transformation and change.
What is the tension of shelter and vulnerability needed to open to change? Can the action of listening be transformative? My projects are invitations to slow down, and explore these questions for your self.
